The JAC T9 Tradepro is Australia's most affordable dual-cab 4x4 ute, but this budget workhorse is anything but cheap and nasty.

2026 JAC T9 Tradepro

The 2026 JAC T9 Tradepro is the most work-focused version of JAC’s dual-cab ute range, adding a cab-chassis format, heavy-duty upgrades and plenty of equipment for buyers chasing maximum capability per dollar. It undercuts established rivals with a strong specification sheet, a capable 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, ZF eight-speed automatic and seven-year warranty.

The question is whether a cheaper ute can genuinely challenge Australia’s established favourites.

Is the JAC T9 good value?

Ordinarily, it's fair to say that the JAC T9 Tradepro represents pretty sharp value for money, but the particular vehicle that we have on test here is so different to the $38,990 base vehicle that it deserves an asterisk visible from space.

The hefty service body, GVM upgrade and custom wheels and tyres mean that this one costs in excess of $60K before on-roads, so that is certainly something to bear in mind. It also fundamentally changes how the T9 Tradepro drives, which is something we'll get into later.

Owner review

For the purposes of establishing a baseline value proposition, let's ignore all of the extras. Imagine that the back of this vehicle is all chassis and that it's riding on the garden-variety factory steel wheels. Does $38,990 plus ORCs still seem a screaming deal?

That positions it below established names such as the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max, with the pricing more akin to newer Chinese entrants like the Foton Tunland and the GWM Cannon.

The Tradepro sits as the more commercial-focused variant within the T9 line-up. Rather than chasing lifestyle buyers with leather trim and premium positioning, it leans into payload and few-frills practicality.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel producing 125kW and 410Nm. Those numbers don't set any records, even in this class, but they are competitive within the segment, especially when paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

The gearbox is one of the more impressive components of the package, shifting smoothly and avoiding the hesitation that sometimes affects budget diesel utes.

The Tradepro comes standard with 18-inch steel wheels, rear differential lock, heavy-duty fabric seats, a reversing camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless phone charging, keyless entry and push-button start.

It also comes with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, which gives buyers some reassurance when comparing it with established brands. Long warranties have become an important weapon for Chinese manufacturers trying to overcome concerns about resale value and long-term ownership.

The bigger question is whether buyers will accept the compromises that come with the lower price. The T9 isn't trying to be a Ranger. It doesn't have the same polish, refinement or breadth of capability. But then it doesn't cost Ranger money either.

How fuel-efficient is the JAC T9?

JAC claims the T9 Tradepro uses 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle, which is a respectable figure for a dual-cab four-wheel-drive ute with a diesel engine and traditional ladder-frame construction.

Real-world driving tells a slightly different story. During almost 1000km of testing, the Tradepro had consumed 9.8L/100km, which is a more realistic number for Australian conditions. That included highway driving, urban use and cross-country driving.

In its defence, it’s worth bearing in mind that this vehicle is lugging about the heavier service body, which also exacts an aerodynamic penalty.

The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel uses modern injection technology and works with the eight-speed automatic to keep engine speed low when cruising. At 100km/h without cruise control engaged, the engine settles around 1700rpm in eighth gear, helping refinement and economy.

There is an odd quirk, though. Activate adaptive cruise control and the transmission appears to lock out eighth gear, leaving the engine running around 2300rpm at highway speeds. That affects noise, fuel consumption and long-distance comfort.

The T9 doesn't currently offer a hybrid or electric alternative in Australia, although the ute segment is moving quickly. Several manufacturers are exploring electrified work vehicles, and future versions of vehicles like this may eventually bring lower running costs.

Against rivals, the JAC sits in the middle of the pack. Smaller diesel engines can sometimes deliver better economy, but larger engines from the Ranger and HiLux offer stronger performance when towing or carrying heavy loads.

For a vehicle aimed at commercial users, the fuel numbers are acceptable rather than exceptional.

Our Tradepro was supplied with a huge bunch of keys for all the various locks on the service body. What there didn't appear to be was any key to unlock the exposed fuel filler cap on the passenger side of the vehicle. A slightly chastened call to JAC's technical team revealed the answer.

In order to find the blade key for the fuel cap, you'll need to disassemble the key fob, and it's inside there. It's not an ideal solution, as repeatedly doing so will wear the plastic detents on the fob to the point where it's easy to imagine the blade key no longer holding when clicking back in.

How much does the JAC T9 cost to own?

Ownership costs are where JAC hopes to close the gap with established brands.

The T9 Tradepro is backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, capped-price servicing and roadside assistance. That warranty period exceeds some traditional competitors and is designed to remove one of the biggest barriers facing newer brands.

Servicing intervals and exact capped-price schedules vary depending on market conditions, but the inclusion of capped pricing gives fleet and private buyers more certainty when budgeting.

In the case of the T9 Tradepro, the intervals are 12 months/15,000km. To fill in the blanks a little more comprehensively, the pricing is included in the table below.

Distance (km)Time (months)Cost per service
15,00012$295
30,00024$552
45,00036$430
60,00048$563
75,00060$484
90,00072$704
105,00084$312

Tot the numbers up and the JAC is significantly more expensive to service than something like a Ford Ranger. Whereas a T9 Tradepro will be $2324 to service for five years, a Ranger would be just $1524. Likewise, a Ranger Black Edition would be around $500 less to insure based on our standard policy criteria.

As far as long-term ownership figures are concerned, the T9 Tradepro benefits from the fact that because it is so inexpensive, depreciation in absolute terms is by definition limited. That said, a ute that saves thousands at purchase but loses heavily at resale can be as expensive to run over a sample five-year period than a more well-known nameplate.

The JAC T9 Tradepro is quoted $2332 to comprehensively insure based on a comparative quote for a 35-year-old male living in Chatswood, NSW.
Insurance estimates may vary based on your location, driving history and personal circumstances.

That price is for a private-use policy. For a trade policy, the quote comes back as $2791 without any stamp duty exemptions or GST credits included.

How safe is the JAC T9?

The JAC T9 Tradepro carries a five-star ANCAP safety rating, giving it the same headline safety score expected of the major players in the dual-cab ute segment. The rating was awarded under the current ANCAP testing criteria and applies to the T9 range tested by the organisation. Full details are available here.

The T9 was tested in 2024 and scored a very presentable 85 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection, 87 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 89 per cent for safety assist.

JAC made plenty of noise around the T9 being one of Australia’s safest utes when it launched, and the five-star result gives the brand a strong foundation. It features a comprehensive suite of active safety systems, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control.

The T9 is fitted with a front-centre airbag, but there’s no driver’s knee airbag, standard kit in the likes of the HiLux, Ranger, D-Max, Triton and BT-50. Yes, they're more expensive utes, so factor that into your consideration.

The problem isn't the number of systems. It's how well they operate.

During testing, some of the driver assistance technology felt underdeveloped. The speed sign recognition system was frequently confused by conditional speed limits and the warnings could become intrusive. The emergency lane-keep system also felt overly aggressive, sometimes applying a sharp correction rather than a gentle nudge.

Adaptive cruise control was another weak point. While the hardware exists, the calibration isn't as polished as the systems found in Ranger, HiLux or D-Max. It can be slow to resume speed after a lane change, leaving the driver waiting while traffic disappears ahead. Then there's that issue with the adaptive cruise locking the vehicle out of eighth gear, which only makes the system seem less polished.

That doesn't make the T9 unsafe, but it highlights the difference between having safety technology and having safety technology that has been properly tuned for Australian roads.

Another example. At several points during our testing, the JAC's screen erroneously flashed up a message noting that a trailer had been connected and that towing mode was enabled, with AEB and lane-keep assist inhibited.

These sorts of errors that concern safety-critical vehicle systems do nothing to build confidence in the integrity of the T9's software ecosystem.

The passive safety foundations appear solid. The cabin structure, airbags and crash-avoidance hardware have all helped it achieve the five-star result, but refinement of the electronic systems still has a lot of room to improve.

What is the JAC T9 like on the outside?

The JAC T9 Tradepro sits in the popular dual-cab ute segment, competing in the same size category as the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Isuzu D-Max.

At 5330mm long, 1965mm wide and 1920mm tall, it is a substantial vehicle. The tested cab-chassis version, especially with the upgraded suspension, larger all-terrain tyres and service body conversion, looks every bit the working ute. It was also so tall at the back that I couldn't reverse it into my home garage.

The front end carries a large grille with a prominent JAC badge, chunky headlights and a bluff nose that gives it a strong road presence. There are hints of styling ideas seen elsewhere in the segment (Mitsubishi Triton, anyone?), particularly in the squared-off front treatment.

The Tradepro specification focuses on function. The steel wheels on the standard-trim vehicle, durable trim and practical tray setup make sense for commercial buyers rather than lifestyle users. It's not there to win any fashion parades.

Visibility is helped by large mirrors and a high seating position, although the lack of a traditional rear view through the service body fitted on this one means drivers need to rely heavily on the reversing camera and side mirrors. The side mirrors aren't heated, so on a typically damp Melbourne winter's morning, it can be a while before they clear, leaving you with very compromised rear view in the meantime.

The tray provides the kind of flexibility buyers expect from a cab-chassis ute. Exact tray capacity depends on the conversion, but the vehicle's payload capability is a key strength, with the Tradepro rated for a payload of 1165kg.

Overall, the T9 Tradepro feels – and is – a big vehicle. Parking in tight city spaces requires a considered touch.

What is the JAC T9 like inside?

The T9 Tradepro's cabin is a mixed bag. There are some surprisingly good touches, but it doesn't hide its price positioning.

Getting in requires more effort than some rivals. The seat height/position and door opening mean that when you haul yourself up, the aperture can feel tight, especially if you're tall.

Break out the tape measure and the 90cm height from seat cushion to the top of the door aperture is pretty standard, but stepping up onto the side steps isn't the same as dropping into a vehicle. After some practice, I found grabbing the fixed handle on the A-pillar and scooching in sideways was the most effective solution.

Once inside, the layout works reasonably well. The dashboard utilises a large portrait-style infotainment screen, a digital instrument cluster and plenty of physical controls. Climate functions, drive modes and key vehicle controls remain accessible without forcing everything through the touchscreen.

Material quality is acceptable at this price point. The dashboard uses soft-touch-style finishes in places, while the heavy-duty fabric seats suit a vehicle intended for work. The seats themselves are comfortable enough, but lack the support and adjustment range found in more expensive competitors.

Rear-seat accommodation is adequate rather than outstanding. There is decent head room, useful storage and ventilation, although the rear bench feels flatter than the front seats. A small floor hump doesn't impinge too seriously on the amount of foot space.

Storage around the cabin is good, with a centre console bin, cupholders and door pockets. It feels designed for tools, phones and everyday work items.

The semi-hexagonal vents that frame the infotainment system draw a lot of, let's call it, inspiration from Subaru. And they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

This isn't a luxury cabin, but then it doesn't need to be. It's a practical workspace and works well in that regard.

Does the JAC T9 have good infotainment?

The T9 Tradepro comes with a 10.4-inch central touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which covers the basics expected by Australian buyers. Unfortunately neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto connect wirelessly, so you'll need to cable up your phone.

There is also wireless phone charging, Bluetooth connectivity and multiple USB-A ports. The absence of USB-C connections feels dated, especially when many newer vehicles have already moved to the newer standard. So you'll probably need to start digging around in the bottom of your drawers for that USB-A cable.

The system itself looks impressive at first glance, but the experience is less polished than the hardware suggests. The interface relies on swiping between menus rather than presenting an intuitive and comprehensive home screen, which can make common functions feel unnecessarily buried.

Radio functionality includes standard AM/FM capability, but the digital radio is, weirdly, accessed via a different part of the system's menu structure. During testing, the digital radio function did not behave consistently.

The vehicle settings menu offers access to drive modes, assistance systems, lighting controls and other features. It covers a lot, but the presentation isn't always the easiest to navigate.

The audio system is acceptable rather than memorable. Phone connection works, and the key smartphone functions are there, but rivals from established brands generally offer a smoother experience.

JAC doesn't currently offer the level of smartphone companion app integration seen in some newer vehicles. There are no major connected-car features that transform ownership.

The infotainment system does enough. It just doesn't feel as mature as the rest of the ute segment. Still, perhaps that's only to be expected given the T9 Tradepro's market positioning.

What is the JAC T9 like to drive?

This is where the T9 Tradepro becomes more interesting.

The expectation with a cheaper ute is usually that everything will feel compromised. The JAC avoids that trap in several important areas.

The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel isn't the most powerful engine in the segment, but its 410Nm torque output suits the vehicle well. The ZF 8HP50 eight-speed automatic transmission is probably the standout mechanical component. It shifts smoothly, keeps the engine in its useful range and avoids the clunky behaviour that affects some rivals.

Performance is adequate rather than exciting. With just 125kW to move such as sizeable hunk, acceleration is relatively leisurely. The 1935kg kerb weight is stated without the weight of the tray. With this service body and GVM upgrade, the local weighbridge showed 2379kg.

The Tradepro's maximum braked towing capacity is 3200kg, which places it slightly behind the 3500kg benchmark offered by some key competitors. In terms of torque/braked towing that compares with the GWM Cannon (400Nm/3500kg), the Foton Tunland (450Nm/3500kg) and the KGM Musso (400Nm/3500kg).

The ride quality surprised. Many utes feel unsettled when unladen, bouncing and skipping over rough surfaces. The extra weight and suspension changes fitted to this vehicle helped settle the body's movement. As a result there's reasonable polish in the overall ride quality. That's with the significant caveat that there's a stack of weight on the back of this vehicle. A standard Tradepro with a tray won't ride like this one.

The GVM upgrade fitted to this particular test vehicle means beefier rear suspension, and it also features far more 'give' in the sidewalls of its massive all-terrain tyres.

It rides with a degree of composure, although broken surfaces can still introduce some lateral shaking through the cabin. The seatbelts can rattle against the interior trim, which becomes irritating on rough roads.

Its steering is light but predictable. It doesn't provide much feedback, but a work ute doesn't need sports-car levels of communication. The vehicle feels easy to place, helped by good mirrors and a commanding driving position.

The all-terrain tyres give it a more serious stance and improve confidence away from sealed roads. The BorgWarner dual-range four-wheel-drive system and rear differential lock add genuine capability. The added ride height improves on the previously so-so 650mm wading depth and 210mm ground clearance.

Noise refinement is reasonable, although the adaptive cruise issue affects highway comfort. Holding seventh gear at speed on the adaptive cruise increases engine noise and makes the ute feel busier than it should. The chunky tyres didn't sing at speed, though, which was a relief.

The biggest disappointment comes from the driver assistance calibration. The systems can interrupt the drive rather than assist it, which takes away from the otherwise relaxed character. There's a tedious process that you'll go through before every journey, dialling out the driver monitor, the speed limit warnings and probably the lane-keep assist. That gets old very quickly.

Despite those flaws, the T9 Tradepro is better to drive than its price suggests. If you were expecting something a bit rough and ready, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Should I buy the JAC T9 Tradepro?

The JAC T9 Tradepro is an interesting vehicle because it forces buyers to rethink what they actually need from a ute.

For years, the default advice in Australia has been simple. Buy a Ranger, HiLux or a D-Max. Choose any of these and you know what you’re getting. Those vehicles have earned their reputations through years of refinement, reliability testing and enormous aftermarket support.

The T9 Tradepro doesn't change that markedly. It certainly won't erase the advantage of these established brands. But as a way for a new brand to establish a foothold, there's a lot to be said for it.

Its biggest strength is the amount of vehicle you get for the money. The equipment list is generous, the warranty is long, the ZF eight-speed automatic is excellent, and the suspension setup on this tested vehicle transformed what could have been a fairly ordinary ride into something much more comfortable.

The engine is also reasonably well matched to the job. It doesn't make standout power or torque figures, but the 2.0-litre diesel feels adequate for most towing, carrying and highway jobs. The four-wheel-drive system, rear differential lock and heavy-duty setup give it genuine working credentials.

Will you miss that last 300kg of braked towing capability? Most casual users won't, and if you were looking to lug a really big load, you'd probably want something with significantly more than 125kW and 410Nm.

Also, in the scoring for this review, we've voided the scores for performance, ride quality and handling and dynamics, largely because in the decidedly non-standard guise that the vehicle was supplied to us, it's not possible to assess the showroom-spec Tradepro.

The T9 Tradepro's compromises are mostly around polish and those final few per cent of development.

The infotainment system feels a generation behind. The lack of USB-C connectivity is disappointing. Some of the driver assistance features need more calibration work, with the driver attention monitor, the speed limit recognition and the maddening adaptive cruise control not matching the sophistication of the best systems in the class.

There are also questions that only time will answer. Resale values, long-term durability and dealer support matter enormously to commercial buyers, and established brands still have a big advantage there. JAC has a small footprint in Australia and search demand from used buyers will be correspondingly small.

But dismissing the T9 Tradepro because it wears a less familiar badge would be a mistake, especially if funds are tight.

It's reasonable to expect a very cheap ute to cut almost every corner. Yet the T9 has a decent drivetrain, offers a lot of metal for your money, and comes with transparent servicing costs and a reasonable warranty.

The Ford Ranger remains the benchmark for all-round sophistication, the Toyota HiLux remains the safe choice, and the Isuzu D-Max offers bulletproof toughness. But the JAC T9 Tradepro poses a specific question in asking whether those advantages are worth several thousand dollars more.

For some buyers, especially owner-drivers who want capability without paying for a prestige badge, the answer may be no.

Andy Enright
Andy Enright

Road Test Editor

Andy brings almost 30 years of automotive writing experience to his role at Drive. When he wasn’t showing people which way the Nürburgring went, he freelanced for outlets such as Car, Autocar, and The Times. After contributing to Top Gear Australia, Andy subsequently moved Down Under, serving as editor at MOTOR and Wheels. As Drive’s Road Test Editor, he’s at the heart of our vehicle testing, but also loves to spin a long-form yarn. Winner of the Newspress award for Best Feature Writer in 2025, Andy's powering up Drive's feature section too. He's still the only person he knows who failed a McDonald’s job interview as a teen. That demonstrates something, but we're not quite sure what.
