The Hyundai i30 Sedan N is a weapon on the track, but is it still fun for everyday driving or is it out of place? We find out.

If it’s an occasional second car rather than one you genuinely need for everyday life, $53K is still a good price for what you get. But it’s too track-focused; the compromises on regular roads can’t be ignored.

2026 Hyundai i30 Sedan N

Performance without the price tag. That’s the joy of the Hyundai i30 N.

First as a hatch, then as a sedan, Australia has been living its best N life for eight years now.

The N Sedan has only been around for a fraction of that time, having arrived with the i30’s facelift in 2024. Yet big changes are already afoot.

The regular i30 Hatch has been discontinued. It’s expected that the next N Hatch will have hybrid assistance, and both the performance and everyday models are destined for a major overhaul next year.

The Sedan has demonstrated its credentials on-track time and again, but if that’s not a big part of your lifestyle, is it still worth having? And should you buy the current model or wait?

Let’s talk.

Is the Hyundai i30 N good value?

The Hyundai i30 N Sedan comes in only one flavour, Premium, and is available with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. Both cost $53,000 before on-roads.

If you’re not set on a sedan, the i30 N Hatch is available with both transmissions and in two grades: pure N or N Premium. The former costs $52,000, while the latter is $55,500, both before on-roads.

There are limited options for customising it, too, beyond premium paint colours ($595) or a sunroof ($2000).

This test car wore dark Ecotronic Grey premium paint but was sans sunroof.

The single grade is well equipped, and comes with features such as a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, an eight-speaker Bose sound system, and 19-inch wheels.

There isn’t a lot of competition in the affordable performance sedan space, but what there is is diverse, as are the prices.

The cheapest is the Toyota GR86 GTS, which costs $46,090, while the Subaru WRX RS is closer in price, costing $56,690.

How fuel-efficient is the Hyundai i30 N?

How much fuel the Hyundai i30 Sedan N uses, unsurprisingly, depends on how you use it.

If you have a long commute, as I do, and travel many freeway kilometres, using Eco mode, the average fuel economy can be as low as 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres – a vast improvement on the claimed 8.3L/100km.

But where’s the fun in that?

Mix things up with the modes, use Sport a lot or even the two N performance modes, and you’ll start to see that figure climb dramatically.

On average, I found the car used 9.7L/100km, but at times it was much higher.

If you only use the i30 N on occasion for weekends or track work, and high fuel prices aren’t too concerning, then it might not be a big deal.

However, $53,000 isn’t big bucks for a performance car, so a high fuel economy is likely to sting a little if you’re using it as a daily driver, too.

How much does the Hyundai i30 N cost to own?

Hyundai covers the i30 Sedan N with its five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, with servicing every 12 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first.

However, for vehicles sold after 1 June 2025, a seven-year warranty applies if servicing is carried out exclusively with a Hyundai dealer.

The WRX and GR86 both come with five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranties, while the Octavia is covered for seven years. Servicing for all three is longer than the i30 N’s, with all required back in for a visit every 12 months or 15,000km.

Servicing is reasonable for the i30 N, with the first three years costing a total of $1296. For five years, all up you can expect to pay out $2167.

The Hyundai i30 N will cost $1837.34 to comprehensively insure based on a comparative quote for a 35-year-old male living in Chatswood, NSW. Insurance estimates may vary based on your location, driving history, and personal circumstances.

How safe is the Hyundai i30 N?

In 2024, ANCAP awarded the Hyundai i30 Sedan a three-star safety rating. It missed out on a higher rating as it didn’t score the necessary marks in the adult occupant and vulnerable road user protection categories.

Points were also deducted for its autonomous emergency braking technology that delivered "poor" performance in preventing collisions in head-on and turning-across-traffic scenarios.

Regardless, the result doesn’t cover the N variants, which are untested.

Safety is one space where the i30 N starts to show its age a little.

We only got the Sedan in Australia a couple of years ago, and the i30 model line was already halfway through its lifespan.

A new model is expected next year, so it’s not massively worth Hyundai’s while to chuck a load of new features at it. For now, everything stays as it was in 2024.

It comes with features such as six airbags, a blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert and assistance, as well as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep, lane-departure warning and lane-centring assist.

Overseas, the i30 N comes with a 360-degree camera, a blind-spot monitor, a driver attention monitor, and adaptive cruise control, but in Australia we miss out.

Losing out on the driver monitor might be positive news for some, as they can be nagging and too easily triggered, but a 360-degree camera would be handy for parking, and only having regular cruise control pretty much renders it pointless, as it can’t speed up and slow down in traffic.

The lane-assistance technology does a good job of keeping things in check without taking over, but the overspeed warning is constantly chirping, even when you slip just 1km/h over the limit and immediately correct yourself.

What is the Hyundai i30 N like on the outside?

There’s no denying it, the Hyundai i30 Sedan N looks cool.

The long bonnet with its sharp creases is dramatic, the large lower air intakes at the front give it an aggressive stance, and the thin red front bumper trim is striking.

The special red N strip continues along the sides, a neat line to make the base colour pop rather than stand out in a garish way, and there are angles everywhere. It’s sleek and stylish in profile, and mean and jagged at the rear.

The dual exhausts are so massive you could lose an arm in them.

As a technically small passenger car, it’s not awkwardly long, but I’d probably prefer the style of the i30 N Hatch.

I particularly like the Ecotronic Grey paint. It’s worth the $595 extra. That said, I love the Performance Blue colour, which is synonymous with the N sub-brand, and would be equally happy with it.

Firstly, everyone knows straight away it’s an N car… No squinting to see if there’s a badge on the back as it flies past you. Secondly, it’s just bright and works beautifully with the red detailing, too. And finally, it’s free.

The other complimentary colour is Atlas White, but to be honest, it’s just a bit boring. Why get a performance car and then not change the colour?

What is the Hyundai i30 N like inside?

The inside of the Hyundai i30 Sedan N doesn’t quite have the flair of the outside, but it’s elegant, the materials are of good quality, and it’s well built.

In a world of increasingly complex gear-shift systems and controls for basic functions moving into infotainment screens, it features a familiar, traditional-style stick and a manual parking brake, as well as plenty of physical buttons for the climate and toggles for the heated and ventilated seats.

However, it’s all black, so it’s very dark, and there are some letdowns.

The infotainment system is surrounded by far too much piano black plastic, some of the buttons look quite old, and there is almost no storage to speak of.

Sure, there’s a small glovebox, but the centre console storage bin is dinky, the doors can’t really fit anything except pens and keys, and the two central cupholders are only good for regular drink bottles.

On the front passenger’s side, there is a very thin slot, but again, it would probably only be useful for pens or perhaps holding a thin map book or a magazine.

As a performance-focused car, the front row is very tight. The seats are separated by a thick unit hiding the transmission tunnel, and are sporty enough to hurt your back after a while, but not so aggressive that they’d be useful on the track.

Rear passengers get a better deal on space, but not by much. Head room and leg room would be limited for folks who are taller than average.

When the front passenger has their seat back, but not all the way, it drastically reduces the room for anyone sitting behind. My kids in their child seats had so little space that their feet were up on the seatbacks in no time.

Installing said child seats is not a task for the faint-hearted. There are ISOFIX anchors on both outboard seats, but getting in the back to pull the straps tight enough is a real squeeze.

Even harder still is connecting the top tethers, because the attachment points are behind the rear headrests on the parcel shelf due to the sedan's body style. You will likely give yourself a bad neck trying to adjust them tightly. Ask me how I know.

All the space is actually hiding in the boot, which is huge. The hinged boot lid limits what you can get in there, though, and because there’s a brace to increase body rigidity for better handling, you can’t through-load long items.

The boot lid also doesn’t hold itself open, so you’ll need to push it all the way back or else you’ll receive a bonk on the head.

Does the Hyundai i30 N have good infotainment?

The infotainment system is probably where the Hyundai i30 Sedan N shows its age the most.

The 10.25-inch screens seem small in this day and age, and they run an older version of Hyundai’s infotainment, which is easy to use but a bit slow, and the quality is murky compared to other vehicles in the brand’s line-up, which utilise more modern software.

There’s a wireless charger, but no wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and even the wired connection requires an approved USB-A-to-C cable.

The USB-C port is only for charging, so I actually wasn’t able to use it, as my phone is too new and I only have an approved C-to-C cable.

This meant relying on the in-built satellite navigation system, which was fine, but again is dated, and doesn’t show live traffic information, and using the Bluetooth media connection.

The quality was not great, and with the road noise, the volume has to be turned all the way up to hear a podcast. Just don’t forget you’ve done so, because if you switch to the radio, you will go deaf if you do.

In the back, there are two USB-C ports for charging and, if you need it, there’s a 12V socket in the front, too.

The i30 N also comes with Hyundai’s Bluelink connected services app, which allows owners to check the vehicle's location, heat and cool the cabin, lock and unlock the car remotely, and access a range of other services.

It’s free for the first five years, after which a subscription fee may be required to continue using some features.

What is the Hyundai i30 N like to drive?

The Hyundai i30 Sedan N is raucous; it’s a lot of fun. It’s powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which in itself doesn’t sound exceptional on paper, but it is fantastic.

Performance is excellent, it’s quick and fiesty, and the eight-speed dual-clutch auto is very responsive.

The Eco and Normal modes don’t let the side down, but they are more tame than Sport, and the N modes – one for the day-to-day and one for track – are full on.

You can adjust the steering, suspension and exhaust noise, and all the information is reflected on the cluster, which is really useful.

In N Custom the steering is noticeably different, but it’s too heavy and nuggety though. It doesn’t feel as sharp as it probably could be for a car of this nature.

It still handles very well, but the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S 245/35 R19 tyres are basically semi-slicks and offer little grip in the wet. They skip around at low speeds and giving it more beans on winding roads can be hair-raising at times.

And they’re loud. Very loud. In any mode at any speed there’s a lot of noise. At higher speeds the rumble is so loud you can barely hear the gear changes, which takes the joy out of all the hard work the engine is doing.

The warble of the exhaust as it pops and crackles is hilarious in N mode. You can also hear the intake noise, the turbo spooling up and the dump valve in this setting. It commands attention wherever you go – which might be great for the driver, but could be obnoxious for passers-by.

But the ride is also deeply compromised by how thin and performance-focused the tyres are. It’s firm and jittery over pock-marked roads, and larger changes in the terrain such as speed bumps are outright uncomfortable.

It rides so low, too, that there are so many places you have to take it incredibly slow and easy to negotiate – getting on or off the driveway, entering car parks with slopes, it’s all so anxiety-inducing it takes the fun out of it.

With this car, you have to fully commit to get the most out of it. It’s not really a cool car you can also ferry your family around in. Trying to make it one isn’t doing it justice.

It’s also worth thinking about what might happen in the future. The next-gen Sedan has been spied, and heard, testing, and there are clearly some big changes underway.

As previously reported by Drive here, the exhaust note sounds smoother with much of the current character absent, likely due to tightening regulations in Europe, and it’s even rumoured the engine could be swapped for the 2.5-litre turbo-four used in the Sonata and Santa Fe.

Should I buy the Hyundai i30 N?

Some decisions are heart over head.

This is one of those times.

The Hyundai i30 Sedan N is a hoot to drive. It makes all the right snaps, crackles and pops, but it is not flawless. The steering isn’t as direct as it could be, and the tyres are too slick for everyday driving.

The tech is also out of date now. It lacks some key safety features, and practically, as a family car, it just doesn’t really work.

If it’s an occasional second car rather than one you genuinely need for everyday life, $53K is still a good price for what you get and you should follow your heart. But in all honesty, it’s too track-focused. The compromises on regular roads can’t be ignored.

For me, the head wins this time.

Kathryn Fisk

Senior Journalist

A born-and-bred newshound, after graduating from a Bachelor of Journalism at the University of Kent, Kathryn worked her way up through the ranks reporting for, and later editing, two award-winning regional newspapers, before joining the UK's biggest newspaper, The Sun. More recently, she has served as News Editor for Wheels, MOTOR, Street Machine, and 4x4 Australia magazines, and is one of only a few women to have served as a Wheels Car of the Year judge. Winner of the Newspress award for Scoop of the Year in 2025, Kathryn is best known at Drive for her powerful investigative feature writing, although she can also be found putting new cars through their paces and breaking news.
