‘Approaching the Riddler’s house’: Mysterious road sign stumps drivers
Most drivers are aware of what local road signs mean, but this mysterious sign has drivers scratching their heads.
When you’ve been driving on the roads for a long time, you generally don’t think twice about various road signs. While stop signs and speed limits are straightforward, a mysterious road sign has popped up in Victoria which has baffled drivers.
An eagle-eyed motorist spotted a road sign that appears to be a hybrid of a roundabout sign merged with an arrow and a slip lane alongside a 30km/h speed limit.
According to the driver, who posted the image on the Cars Australia Reddit thread on 26 July 2026, the mysterious sign was spotted on Carrington Street in Hampton East, a suburb approximately 14km south-east of Melbourne.
“I have never seen a sign like this in my life,” the poster said. The Reddit thread garnered a range of comments, mostly humorous responses from other users.
A commenter said, “makes me question everything”, while another remarked: “Approaching the Riddler’s house”.
A different Reddit user doubled down on the confusion when they said, “weird how 30km/h makes the squiggle feel ten times sketchier than if it was 60, like the road itself is admitting it doesn’t trust you”.
“Saw one of these near my old place and my brain just froze for a second trying to figure out which way I was supposed to be dodging,” they added.
Another Reddit commenter said the direction was causing them trouble when they said, “I just looked it up on street view. That’s the most innocent looking mini roundabout you could ever imagine. It must be hiding some surprises. Doesn’t help the sign makes it look like you need to go round it in anticlockwise.”
Despite driver speculation, Bayside Council chief executive officer Matthew Cripps said the road sign is intended to warn motorists of the incoming hazard.
“The sign is intended to alert drivers of the upcoming roundabout and warn them about a side street before the roundabout. The advised speed is to assist motorists in safely navigating the bend and roundabout,” Cripps told Drive.
“As this is a yellow advisory sign, rather than a regulatory road rule sign, drivers are encouraged to follow the advised speed to safely navigate the bend and roundabout, but no specific fine applies for not following the suggested speed.”
