Polestar 4 to carry the brand’s sales hopes through 2027

Until the Polestar 7 compact SUV arrives at the end of next year, almost all of Polestar Australia’s eggs will remain in the basket of the Polestar 4 'coupe'.

Polestar is set to double down on its top seller with a 'wagon' spin-off due in Australia at the end of this year.

“Australian drivers still have a bias and preference for SUV,” Polestar Australia boss Scott Maynard told Drive at the launch of the updated Polestar 3.

“We’ve seen more and more interesting cars like coupe-style cars, and Polestar 4 has been able to capitalise on that because it is a little bit larger, it rides a little bit higher, it’s a bit more SUV-like than a traditional coupe.

“But it’s not the large, bulky car that some buyers would prefer to stay away from ... The growth is still going to be in SUV for the foreseeable future.”

When asked how Polestar planned to compete against lower-cost rivals looking to beat them in terms of value, Maynard replied: “We don’t.”

“We consider that there is still some thin air that makes available a space for a premium EV,” he said.

“I’m really proud of the fact that we’re starting to attract customers who have traditionally bought from the German set of luxury car brands, but are looking for both an alternative to a German car and love the fact that we’re still European, Sweden-based, and are also looking to switch to EV.”

Maynard is at pains to point out that Polestar is working to a different set of targets to many of its key rivals.

“We’re not out there competing and chasing out-and-out share or volume, and so without the need to relentlessly pursue 10,000-plus sales, but rather make a good living from a number that’s significantly less than that,” he said.

“We can continue to operate in that way and as a premium EV player.”

Asked if he enjoys seeing traditional German rivals flounder, he said: “I’ve worked for some of those brands, so I’ve got a healthy respect for them, but it is satisfying to see customers make a move and then be pleased with that move. It does come with some challenges.

“If you were to line up a couple of spec sheets and if you were to attempt to make a purchasing decision just based solely on that information, you would find that the boxes would line up, leading you to question why you would pay the money.”

During the first half of 2026, Polestar sold 1202 cars, 902 of which were Polestar 4s. That puts the company in a position to challenge for its best-ever year of sales in Australia.

The Polestar 7 is due at the end of 2027, and it’s likely this electric compact SUV will boost sales significantly. Aside from external rivals, it’s likely the 7 will have to face off against Geely group siblings such as the Zeekr 7X, the Volvo EX30 and Smart #1.

For the time being, the Polestar 4 is still required to do the heavy lifting.
