2026 Volkswagen Golf 110TSI R-Line review

For those who want a bit of extra aesthetic flair without going to the extra expense of choosing the Golf GTI (as excellent as it is), then this Golf 110TSI R-Line is a peachy, practical and premium-feeling option.

It has all of the important hallmarks of the model on display; something forged over many decades and generations.

It's certainly feeling like a more expensive and premium option in 2026, but does well with the driving experience, presentation, technology and general sense of quality.

There's no doubt that the influx of new models (mostly from China) has left the Volkswagen Golf feeling a little more spendy than it once used to be.

Whereas the Volkswagen Golf range starts at $39,290 plus on-road costs for the entry-level 110TSI Life, we've got a circa $10,000 step up into the R-Line variant we have at $48,690 plus on-road costs.

This big jump in price does bring a lot of extra features, however. The infotainment screen grows to the 12.9-inch Discover system with more features, the sound system picks up an extra speaker, and we get a three-zone climate-control system in the R-Line variant.

On the outside you get 18-inch alloy wheels, the R-Line exterior treatment with different bumpers and sill extensions, privacy glass as standard, and projector-style LED headlights are employed.

On the inside, regular cloth seats are swapped out for sportier pews with integrated headrests, leather-appointed trimming and electric adjustment (with memory) for the driver.

While the 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine with 110kW and 250Nm holds steady, the chassis of the Golf R-Line gets a sporty makeover as well.

The suspension is lowered, and steering moves to a progressively assisted setup for more adjustment through the driving modes.

That's all very nice, but when you've got hatchbacks and small SUVs these days, with loads of standard equipment, priced from as low as $30,000, the value equation for the Golf has certainly changed.

These days, the premium sense of the fit and finish, along with the driving experience, is forced to do a lot more of the heavy lifting for the Golf's appeal.

Claimed efficiency for the Volkswagen Golf 110TSI is 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres, which is noticeably more miserly than the 7.3L/100km claim you get with the Golf GTI.

In the real world, we saw a number of around 7.1L/100km during a more balanced test of highway and town driving. But after an extended stint on the open road, we saw as little as 5.6L/100km, which is quite impressive.

For those who really want to count the pennies, though, keep in mind that this little German prefers to drink the expensive fuel of 95RON premium unleaded.

Servicing for the Volkswagen Golf works out to be quite expensive, thanks in part to a four-figure dealership visit in the fourth year.

Three years costs $1630 in total, which averages out at $543 per year. The next visit is $1029 alone, however, which means you've got a five-year total of $3106 ($621 per year, on average).

These numbers makes the Volkswagen Golf one of the more expensive hatchbacks to keep serviced.

A Volkswagen Golf R-Line costs $2081.70 to comprehensively insure based on a comparative quote for a 35-year-old male living in Chatswood, NSW. Insurance estimates may vary based on your location, driving history and personal circumstances.

The Volkswagen Golf has a five-star ANCAP safety rating, which comes from testing in 2022 by Euro NCAP.

This includes an 88 per cent safety rating for adult occupants, while child occupants almost match that number at 87 per cent. Vulnerable road users (pedestrians) get a 74 per cent protection rating, while the safety systems of the Golf have a 76 per cent rating.

The price of the Golf might be high in 2026, and feeling like more of a premium choice amongst other hatchbacks and small SUVs.

But for many, the general quality of the interior would go a long way to help justifying the asking price of the Golf. It's something that has been a calling card of Volkswagen's hatchback for so long – an understated sense of quality – and that remains the case today.

Although, there is a problem here. The lack of physical controls inside the cabin of the Golf – which might help it yield a pleasing aesthetic – makes it a bit annoying to use everyday.

Volkswagen has admitted this as being a misstep. Adjusting some of the climate controls is frustrating, and I found myself accidentally turning off the screen occasionally as I rested my hand.

Put simply: old-fashioned physical controls (which can still be visually pleasing) are better than what we have here.

Going to the expense of the R-Line gets you some nice seats, which are electric with memory and trimmed in partial leather. They're an excellent seat to spend time in as well, with good adjustment, plenty of support and a healthy dose of under-thigh support.

The steering wheel is also upgraded, with a leather-wrapped three-spoker that looks and feels much nicer than the standard fare. The physical buttons on this tiller are better than the modern-style buttons you get on other Volkswagens. There's less accidental touching of buttons when you're on the twirl.

There's also interior ambient lighting, the larger infotainment display and some nice materials throughout the cabin (along with plenty of attention to detail) to make it great place to spend time.

Its second row is quite spacious for the segment, and affords enough space for adults to get in and comfortable behind a reasonably long-limbed driver. Younger families could fit rearward-facing child seats without too much drama. We fit three kids in here during our time with the car, but three adults could be a bit of a squeeze.

There are rear air vents and a third climate zone, and we've got privacy glass as standard fitment.

The second row has a fold-down armrest and 60/40 split on the fold, which grows boot space from 374 litres to 1230L.

Going up from 10.3 inches to 12.9 inches isn't just about size, the Discover system in this R-Line variant also has more features. There's an extra speaker in the sound system, three-zone climate control, voice controls and embedded navigation within the system.

Otherwise, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both available, as well as AM/FM radio. But we've also got a decent 360-degree camera system, as well as those controls that can be frustrating. The touch-sensitive volume control is acceptable when you've stopped and can direct all of your attention to it, but it's not as easy as a regular volume knob.

Otherwise, the operating system is quite good, and we've got a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver that can run maps and navigation.

The 110TSI in the name of this Golf refers to the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine, which has decent outputs of 110kW and 250Nm. It's a good performer, which of course misses out on the adrenaline and theatrics of more powerful 2.0-litre offerings.

You can feel a lack of low-down torque at times, which is covered by the eight-speed automatic transmission well enough. It drops down gears quickly and smoothly, revving up the engine more to get moving. You'll notice this more so when you're loaded up with humans and gear (like we were quite a bit during our testing).

That eight-speed torque converter automatic, which is different to the dual-clutch unit that Volkswagen has used for many years, makes the Golf a smoother and easier car to drive at low speeds and through traffic.

It might not have the outright crispness of gearchanges when on the move. But it's good regardless, and is happy to jump down multiple ratios at once to give you the thrust you're looking for. And if you want the gearbox to be more aggressive, nudge that unobtrusive gear selector into S.

The best things about the Golf R-Line from a driving point of view are certainly the ride quality, steering and handling.

Its suspension is lowered and sportier, but not so much to ruin the driving experience. There's a high level of engineering fluency that is plainly apparent in the way that the Golf handles bumps gracefully, but also displaying fantastic body control.

It's a fun car to drive through the corners, but also pleasurable to drive sedately around town, through the steering feel, ride quality and dynamic ability.

The worst thing I can level at the car is a bit of road noise being generated on poor roads, with a bit of humming from the tyres making its way into the cabin on coarse-chip surfaces.

There's a lot to like about the Volkswagen Golf, even though the price is high relative to the likes of a GAC Aion UT or Emzoom, Kia K4 or MG 4 Urban. The Golf continues to duke it out against old enemies like the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic (with desirable hybrid power), as well as copping some friendly fire from the likes of Skoda and Cupra.

The Mini Cooper is in close firing range as well, and even the upmarket Audi A3 isn't a world away in terms of price. So while the Volkswagen Golf continues to impress in its inherent quality, there's still plenty of choice for buyers to ponder with hybrid and electric power available.
