2015-2020 BMW 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series hybrids recalled over moisture problem

The fault could allow moisture to enter the starter motor, potentially resulting in a short circuit, according to the recall notice.

BMW Australia has recalled 292 examples of its 2015 to 2020 BMW 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series plug-in hybrids, citing a potential fault with moisture entering the starter motor.

The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts, says the manufacturing defect could result in the engine not starting, or potentially cause a short circuit.

"Due to a manufacturing defect, moisture may be able to enter the starter motor causing corrosion and result in the engine not starting.

"Additionally, this may cause a short circuit while the vehicle is in operation or parked, potentially leading to a vehicle fire.

"A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and/or damage to property.

"Vehicles should be parked outdoors away from structures and other vehicles until the starter motor has been replaced."
