Toyota and Nissan production impacted by earthquake in Japan

Several Japanese manufacturing plants supplying vehicles to Australia have shut down after a deadly earthquake in Japan.

At least 23 people are reported dead after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake on Japan’s Kyushu island on Tuesday, according to the ABC.

The island is home to Toyota and Nissan manufacturing facilities that build vehicles, including the Lexus NX and Nissan Patrol.

Automotive News reports that around three days of production of up to 5,200 vehicles has been impacted at Toyota’s Miyata plant which manufactures the Lexus ES, Lexus UX, Lexus RX, and Lexus NX.

Nissan’s impacted Shatai Kyushu plant makes the Nissan Patrol for Australia while the brand's nearby Motor Kyushu plant makes the Nissan X-Trail.

Automotive News said the region contains a number of automotive parts suppliers that could also have been impacted by the earthquake.

Of the impacted vehicles, the Nissan X-Trail is currently the most popular in Australia, with 7432 total sales recorded in the first six months of 2026.
